I have yet to buy my first E-book, because I am reluctant to pay for
something useful that might suddenly become unavailable if, say, I
upgrade my computer.

Bruce Eckel claims that he has had great success in making the entire
text of his books available on the web for free -- people are still
willing to pay the price for having a bound volume that they can read
at the beach, or wherever.  Moreover, that way he benefits from readers'
comments before he has to commit to print.
