command-line history problems

I'm using Python 2.2.  On a particular machine, command history isn't
working.  When I hit the up-arrow, I get:

>>> ^[[A

The same version of Python works correctly on a different machine.  On
the problem machine, in the bash shell, command history works fine.
Anyone know what I can do to correct this?
