Updating a progress bar?

what is the best way to update a progress bar while searching files. I am
writing a simple file searching program and the way i am updating the
progress bar is to scan the drive for the number of files then extrapolate
the progress from the current file against the number scanned! does this
make sense? is there a quicker way? or another method completely. See my
other post titled "Amount of files of a drive?"
