Hard to say.  Probably the user it runs at doesn't have permission to
write to /dev/console.  Your cron daemon should generate an email when a
cron job it runs has output or has a problem executing the command;
check your email account.

This is far afield of Python, now; you should address any further
questions to a more appropriate newsgroup, like comp.unix.questions or
comp.unix.shell.
