Why is Python popular, while Lisp and Scheme aren't?

I do not want to say Emacs-like because there are Lisp-aware editors
that do not get into the chords which drive Emacs. I know just a few
supported by the Emacs-like editors I use, but they also let me use
non-chordy editing. That said...

to an NG or writing an email I go into withdrawal very quickly if I
have to type too much ad hoc code without help.

I am close! I have asked twice here what folks use to do Python, and I
have yet to get one solitary answer. That is /really/ strange. Anyway,
what IDE /do/ you use?
