Twisted (http://www.twistedmatrix.com) has an asychronous remote object
protocol, with support for references, copied state, security, and lots
more. The protocol (Perspective Broker) also has implementations in Java and
in Emacs Lisp, and could be implemented in other languages as well.

For simpler cases, where request/response is all you need, XML-RPC is a
great choice, since there are implementations in most programming languages
in use today.
