Isn't this what happened with 1.6 and the 2.0 alpha?  I seem to remember 
they were announced on the very same day.  As I recall, however, the 1.6 
release was advertised as "Well, we're contractually obligated to do it, so 
here it is, but we don't actually expect anybody will use it".
