Python is an excellent choice both for writing web applications and
driving web-based interfaces.

All you'll need should be in the standard Python library.

I'd head to the "Newbie" page at www.python.org and work thru one of
the tutorials. From the standard Python library, you'll need the cgi
moduel for writing CGI scripts, and urllib or urllib2 for controlling
a CGI script from your Python script.
