How to configure and install Python

Hi,
I'm a Linux newbie who needs to install the latest Python software. The
developer said to use this syntax once the files are unzipped:

./configure

make

I get an error when doing the first step:

"no acceptable cc found in $PATH"

Do I have the syntax right?
