tkinter entry widget and extended chars

It seems that I can't enter characters into a tkinter entry widget in
the range 128-255. I thought that in previous versions I could, but I
could be wrong. I can enter using cut/paste from an app like
kcharselect.

This is using python 2.1 on linux.

Is there something I need to set, or a magic method?
