Indeed. There are many problems with trying to send mail directly to
the remote MTA; finding the MX record is just one of them.  For
example, the remote mail exchanger may be down, or refuse to accept
mail unless reverse name lookup succeeds, etc.

So as a MUA, you always send mail to your local MTA.
