Reading email and newsgroups from Python?

Just getting started with Python and
wxPython.  I'm interested in receiving
and managing email and newsgroup posts
with these.

Will be doing this initially for Win98,
but will eventually be doing same for
Linux.  (Using existing OS services
should make Linux easy, I suspect.)

Any code snippets you can suggest to
get me started?
