trouble making python on HPUX

Apologizing in advance - trouble is probably platform-dependent.

When trying to run make after running ./configure, the following error
is received:

	thread_pthread.h:6: p_thread.h: No such file or directory

I noticed that during ./configure the file pthread.h was not found.
What is going on here and how can I fix it?
