"Cope" is exactly the correct verb.  You cope with arthritis because you've
got no choice. Much the same is true of Fortran.  You use it because there's
nothing else you can do.  First because the alternative was assembly. Later,
because you need complex math and the other languages available don't
support it. Finally you've got a huge existing library of routines and no
time to re-write them all in something else.
