BUG? Python 2.0 chokes on international characters in Unicode strings

Argh. I've just read some other postings in the newsgroup and found messages
concerning my problem... guess I should've done it the other way around...

The exception I got was "UnicodeError: ASCII encoding error: ordinal not in
range(128)".

A bug fix or FAQ entry on this would be nice. (Maybe there is one and I just
haven't found it :)
Does anyone know if this is in the bug database somewhere?
