If PDF is acceptible, I would recommend reportlab (http://www.reportlab.com).

If you're looking to generate postscript directly, Sping
(http://piddle.sourceforge.net) includes a postscript module that supports
either EPS or multipage PS generation.  It's not as complete as reportlab,
but it is still useful.  At worse, it would provide a base for anything you
wanted to build.  (Plus, I happen to know that the maintainer is in the
middle of writing it's documentation and would welcome any useful
additions. ;-)
