Changes in __getitem__ in Python 2.0?

Thanks to Frank and Tim for the help.

After further review on the play, the ruling on the field is that I'm a
dunderhead.

You guys were both right (as if there was ever any doubt).  The same kind of
thing chokes in Python 1.6 as well.
