That's easy to say.

If lots of people contributed Python modules that were coded in a
non-portable way, would we blame those users?  No!  We'd look for a
way to encourage newbies to do the right thing!

I still blame RPM for making it too damn hard to do the right thing.
RPM mist be the Perl of packaging. :-)
