Scanners and OCR engines

We need to automate some document management and I'm looking for a scanner and an OCR engine that I
can automate. 

A Python interface would be preferable but COM would be fine. Failing that a C API would do and we
could put our own object model around it.

Does anyone know of any automation friendly scanners and OCR engines?
