Grab window contents in Python?

Hi,
    Is there a way I can grab the contents of a text window of a commercial
program, using Python 2.0?  I've seen a VB program that could tell you the
window handle of any window you pointed at with the mouse.  I'm thinking
that if I could do something like that in Python 2.0, that would be a start.
Any thoughts?

P.S. I don't want to use VB.
