Confused re: popen()

I am having one heck of a time figuring out how to run a dos program
interactively.

I want to:
1.  Issue a "CVS login" command, which when run in a dos responds with
a password prompt.
2.  Enter the password.
3.  Issue a "CVS update" command.

Can anyone give me an example of how to do this?  Or is there a package
out there that can hand CVS?

I am running ActivePython 2 on a Win2000 box.
