So good, in fact, that it prompted an immediate press release from the
GCC team that it was a development version, was never intended as an
official release, and a recommendation not to use it.

Note that additionally, the ABI in 2.96 was different than in _both_
2.95.x and 3.x.  That's what one gets for releasing a development
snapshot as if it were a true release.
