Really, you should always do so--pickles are binary data and should be
written to binary files.  It just so happens that on *nix, there's no
practical distinction between binary and text mode.  ;)   (There is a
distinction on Mac, as well as Windows, IIRC, and I have no idea for other
platforms...)
