Copyright Madness

Hi,

     I'm considering using Python 2.1.1 for a commercial application that I
intend to market and sell for profit.  I've explored python.org and found
only confusion.  It seems that earlier versions of Python were not as
copyright restrictive as 2.1.1.  Would my plan be a violation of the GPL?
Would I have to distribute my program for free?  I'm pretty confused on this
matter, and I really don't want to call a lawyer.  Thanks.
