Python 2.2a2 on Mandrake

I can never get configure to  pass the "readline"-check. The configure 
log points to termcap.

configure:6918: checking for rl_completion_matches in -lreadline
configure:6937: gcc -o conftest -g -O2   conftest.c -lreadline -ltermcap 
-lpthread -ldl  -lutil 1>&5
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -ltermcap
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

I've installed the latest termcap.rpm for Mandrake but no joy.  There is no 
termcap library I can find.  

What is the secret?
