Other than dropping the &output=gplain from the end,  I think that's the
shortest groups reference.  Dropping this also makes it easier to follow the
thread.

It then pares down to:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=cpzo969i4k.fsf%40cj20424-a.reston1.va.h
ome.com

You can convert %40 back to @, but that opens it to potential
misinterpretation:
http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=cpzo969i4k.fsf@cj20424-a.reston1.va.hom
e.com

For python posts it'd be nice if a reference to the pipermail URL were held
in the message:
http://mail.python.org/pipermail/python-list/2001-August/059581.html

But I can't get anywhere close to this:  ;-(
