IDLE and Command line

  IDLE is an integrated development environment: it allows editing
source files, executing them within IDLE, debugging, class browsing, and
so forth.  It just happens to start up with the window with the command
interpreter (just like the command line) open; to see what other things
it can do, you have to look in the menus.
