I am a complete coding newbie, looking for a first language to learn.

I consider Perl, I consider C++ (or even d-flat... bleyech), I consider
Java, I consider javascript.

I am not sure why I should choose any of those langauges over any of the
other languages I am considering. Can you guys sell me on Python?

Bear in mind that I have no previous programming skills, I don't know what
a tuple is. I know what a variable is, and what an unsigned long is.... I
understand logical stuff like if-else statements, loops and things....
Just don't know anything about how to make them work in a language.

At first I am thinking that I might set projects for myself that could be
things like creating reports (in word2000 format) using information from
various router configs/firewall configs.. perhaps would like to write OS
hardening scripts for both NT and Unix based servers...

I am thinking about creating an AI to play in a PBEM Titan game, or at
least create something that would automate most of the tasks required to
moderate such a game.....

I am guessing that I could perform some of this stuff with each language,
but prolly not all of it with any language.

What I am looking to get out of my first language is something that will
help me learn good structure, learn about OO, (that is becoming
increasingly important isn't it?) something that is going to be intuitive,
something with good support ( i am hoping I won't but expecting I will need
it) something with good docs, something with easy to understand error
explanation....

Maybe that is too much to ask for

>B )

Anyways, I am hoping you guys can sell me on Python. I have a friend who
tells me it rocks.

Cha!

Nemir
