Zope question: collaborative environments?

Hi Bryan,

Well, you've seen enough feedback to convince you that Zope is not
suitable for the "quickie" that your boss is looking for. On the other
hand, you might consider an alternative point of view. There are some
existing modules that may get you 97% of the way to meeting the stated
objectives, examples to follow.

Keep in mind that you can drive a car with no more than a "big picture"
understanding of the intricate processes that are going on "under the
hood". Zope can also be used that way today, with modest effort,
especially on a (grimace) Windows box. There, I said it. It's really
just the initial install that's easier, mostly because there are still
plenty of folks that haven't gotten comfortable with Linux (yet).

Beware! This path can result in Zope Addiction, an affliction with
symptoms not limited to habitual discussion list scouring, source code
snooping, and even studying existing documentation, such as it is. The
malady occurs because blind use of Zope Modules for specific
applications inevitably leads to the urge to make "little changes", to
get the thing to do _What_You_Need_, instead of just living with the
generic "out of the box" behavior. It's Open Source, right? Python is
easy, right? Well, yes, but . . .

Remember it really did take close to ten years of development for
Linux, Apache, and Python too, to reach their current state of
maturity. The Zope project is just under two years old, and while it
truly is displaying an astounding rate of development, it needs every
bit of it. If for some unaccountable reason you decide to try the
suggestions listed below, and one morning wake up and find yourself
infected, don't say you weren't warned! BTW, welcome to The Ward!

OK, here goes. For the discussion piece, take a look at "SquishDot",
a Zope rendition of the incomparable geek magnet, SlashDot:

and "ZUBB", a Zope version of the Ultimate Bulletin Board:

 http://www.zope.org/Members/BwanaZulia/ZUBB

or, for something completely different, try "ZWiki":

For the Tracking piece see "ITrack":

 http://www.zope.org/Members/shalabh/iTrack

and you might also find "TimeTracker" useful:

 http://www.zope.org/Members/cabbie/TimeTracker

and / or Zope's own "Tracker":

Good Luck!
Jerry S.
