That sounds very likely - £ in latin-1 is different from £ in the
DOS-codepage - a fact I had forgotten, which has probably caused all
of this confusion.

Mark, thanks for your patience and explanations. I think I now have
enough understanding to work out what is going. When I have a
reasonably coherent explanation of things, I'll post it here, if there
is interest.
