Maybe you have a bad gcc config?

Search the newsgroup for LONG_BIT and you'll see
  http://www.deja.com/getdoc.xp?AN=685623477&fmt=text
which says to see:
  http://x54.deja.com/[ST_rn=ps]/getdoc.xp?AN=679451034&fmt=text

As I understand it, Red Hat 7.0 shipped with bad versions of gcc/glibc.
