newbie: writing to the root window

I'm considering learing python and one project I am considering would
require python to write text and possibly graphics to the root window of
an X display.  I would rather not use an external program like root-tail
(a c program).

Saw something called wxpython, can it do "root window" stuff?  Don't
care about MS-windows, just unix/linux.
