*all* Python variables are references to objects.
but that doesn't help you: assignment modifies the
target namespace, not the object. objects cannot
be overwritten.
or in other words, "a = b" doesn't modify the object
that "a" pointed to before the assignment. nor does
it modify the object pointed to by "b".
