using python variables inside quotes

I received a number of helpful suggestions and comments.  Thanks to
Jeff(s), Peter and Michael.

The overwhelming response was that using Python's %s string operator
is the more natural approach.  Although this initially felt awkward to
me coming from a Perl background, I'm already getting used to it and
can see its benefits.
