	The "homework aspect" is one reason I went with the FORTRAN
example. I suspected the poster is probably on a UNIX-clone where
FORTRAN is a rare fish (the "don't use AWK" comment).

	Twenty years of coding in F77 also makes it rather easy to
quick-and-dirty realistic programs to these very  (though I wouldn't
want to consider attempting anything with HTML or email parsing <G>).
