install gone awry

Hello Python gang,
I have installed Python literally dozens of times.
For some reason my most recent intall has had something go wrong with it.
I noticed the problem when compileall.py got stuck in an infinite loop.
It looks like the "os" function has gagged.
Here is screenshot illustrating the problem:
