Compiling PIL under RH6.2

I have been trying to compile Python imaging library under RH6.2 (I was
unable to find a rpm). Unfortunately I am not at the system right now,
but when I do the make boot (using the appropriate makefile) I get
an error saying that it is unable to make /usr/lib/python/lib/config/Makefile
(or something like that). This sounds like a file which would be created
if I had compiled python myself from the sources (which I didn't do, I 
installed the RPMs). Is there anyone who has successfully compiled PIL
under RH6.2? Any hints as to what to do?
