That ALWAYS happens. As soon as I post a question to Usenet I 
figure it our for myself 30 minutes later.

My problem was caused by an older version of NumPy (ver14)
which required an older version of DistUtils. 

The combination of DistUtils-0.8.2 and Numerical-15.3 worked
perfectly.
