Thanks!  Actually, the following works better:

    ( val1, val2, val3, val4, val5 ) = unpack( "<16sBBBI", header )

I tried this both on an Intel and a Sun machine and they both return
what I expect.  I also forgot to mention that the last value was
unsigned.

Actually, ex-Waterloo ... graduated last year.
