zope, python vs apache, perl

Zope is great for remotely administering a simple site.
You can build a well structured zope site with remarkably
little effort. Using python to make cgi scripts running
under apache gives you more direct control but you pay
for that with complexity. The most complex of all is
trying to extend zope or implement somthing in perl.
If you plan on an easy-to-maintain site,
You definitely want Zope for content and
Python for the backend. This works just
fine when served through apache.
