Newby question: how manage user input??

I want to make a simple script that print out
some text (actually questions), get what the user
wrote at the displyed prompt and make some calculation
with that.
I tried to implement the user input with stdin or raw_input but after
returning the value the function I wrote doesn't
get back to the main loop??

Some refs (with examples) on the net for this problems?
Or could someone explain it to me??
