Documentation - underscores in \section

[Sorry this is perhaps somewhat off-topic]

For LaTeX gurus out there - 

Has anyone noticed that underscores do not work in \section, even if
preceeded by a \ (backslash). 

Mod_python, having an underscore in the title, is very much affected by
this little problem...

I am not a LaTeX expert, so I thought I was doing something wrong, but
then noticed that the orginal Python documentation has the same problem.

E.g. if you look at the PDF documentation for sunau module, AU_read,
section 14.4.1, you will see in the description something like:

AUprotect unbox voidb at x kern .06....

Is there any way around this?
