Playing wave files on Windows

Hi All--
This is a FAQ.  I know it's a FAQ.  But I can't find the answer now.

How can I play a sound file on Windows.  I don't want to do anything
else, just play a wave file. ...

I will summarize the answers and compose a FAQ entry for addition to the
FAQ.
