python and I/O

use the open() builtin:
NULL = open('/dev/null', 'w')
NULL.write("This is being written to /dev/null")
ZERO = open("/dev/zero", 'r')
nulls = ZERO.read(5)
print nulls	# gives "\0\0\0\0\0"
