Can't configure pygtk+ or pygimp for installation

Hello. I'm having a terrible time installing pygtk+ and pygimp. The
following error message comes up for both installations when I run
./configure: 

	"Couldn't find the python config makefile. Maybe you are missing
	the development portion of the python installation"

This cannot be, since I fully compiled and installed Python 1.5.2. Can
someone help me?
