Please help, trying to configure pygtk and pygimp

If anyone has successfully done so, won't you help me get past the
installation? Every time I run ./configure (for both pygtk+ and pygimp),
this error comes up:

	"Couldn't find the python config makefile. Maybe you are missing
	the development portion of the python installation"

This cannot be, since I fully compiled and installed Python 1.5.2. Can
someone help me?
