All wrong (without appropriate escaping):

    os.system("cp thisinthemiddleofmy\{cmd}.tar")
    os.system("cp thisinthemiddleofmy\{cmd\}.tar")
    os.system("cp " + cmd)
    os.exec*
    os.spawn*

Okay:

    subprocess.call(('cp', 'thisinthemiddleofmy\{cmd\}.tar')) #
shell=True=Dangerous
    sarge.run('cp thisinthemiddleofmy{0!s}.tar', cmd)
