This argument presupposes that ".emacs" on its own
should be considered an extension, which is the
very thing under dispute.

If it's not considered an extension, it gets renamed
to ".emacs.1", just the same as any other file with
no extension, e.g. "foo" to "foo.1". So it's equally
consistent whichever way you think of it.
