Well, not the Tim you were thinking of, but ...

I think the reason * doesn't work is that it is partially superscripted
in most fonts.

For example, compare:

    *deco
    @deco
    -deco

@ and - are vertically centred with the text. However, * is positioned
slightly above the text.
