	Can you send me the output from configure?  Also, try
	--without-cxx instead.  Finally, an easier work around is:

Oops!  Sorry, everybody;
  configure --without-cxx
(which my notes say I'd earlier tried, with unsatisfying
results) appears indeed to be the minimal invocation in
my environment to yield a happy conclusion.

We're carrying on some of this in private correspondence.
While I remain uncertain about python-dev folkways, I'll
report more conclusions as I judge them of general interest.
